Early Years Mathematics


This course will be of interest to all who work in early years settings and who wish to support the development of early mathematics skills in their pupils. It will cover the following topics, amongst others:


- The role of play in early maths
- The role of maths in early years play
- The importance of everyday maths
- Fostering and encouraging worthwhile mathematical talk
- The social context of early maths
- Links with Aistear
- Methods and approaches in early years maths
- Practical examples
- Role of the early years teacher

There will be an emphasis on practical examples and hands-on learning in each of the four sessions. On completion of this course participants will have had an opportunity to deepen their understanding of how playing, talking, making, doing, drawing and experimenting can provide a sounder basis for pupil learning than premature formality in learning maths.
